For nearly three decades, Treehouse Shakers has been crafting original dance-plays that blend movement, story, and imagination to inspire audiences of all ages. Founded in 1997 by storyteller and director Mara McEwin and choreographer Emily Bunning, our company has created more than twenty original works performed in theaters, festivals, and schools nationwide. Each production is an invitation to see the world through fresh eyes — where stories move, and movement tells a story.
Our repertoire spans a rich spectrum of experiences, from Hatched, a tender introduction to life on the farm for babies and toddlers, to Let’s Talk About IT!, an empowering exploration of identity and belonging for teens. Productions like The Boy Who Grew Flowers, Under the Tangle, and Olive & Pearl weave together dance, theater, and folklore to celebrate empathy, diversity, and the power of imagination. With new works such as Flutter, The Deepest Breath, and Sail Away, we continue expanding what performance can mean for young audiences — and for the grown-ups who accompany them.
Every Treehouse Shakers performance is created with inclusivity and accessibility at its heart. Through free and low-cost performances, residencies, and relaxed performances for neurodiverse audiences, we ensure that all children — regardless of background or ability — can experience the wonder of live theater. Because we believe that when children are given the tools of imagination, they learn to envision — and build — a better world.
